February marks the 25th anniversary of the death of one of Britain's finest novelists and one of my literary heroines - Angela Carter. I have loved her writing for almost as many years as she has been gone, but it is her last novel - Wise Children - to whom my heart specifically belongs.

In a recent interview Donald Trump was asked who his heroes were. His answer was astonishing. Not for its rambling nature - that's a given these days - but for the total lack of imagination. All of which has made me think about the importance of my heroes, particularly in turbulent times.

I think we can all agree that 2016 was a stinker of a year - be it your view on politics or the shocking number of ridiculously talented people who shuffled off this mortal coil.
